Look at the listings on the top of the search results (below the sponsored ads) and take some time to look at the shops that have the most reviews.
What kinds of items are they selling?
What are the most common price points?
How many products do they have in their shop?
Use An Etsy Keyword Tool
You can use an Etsy keyword tool that will give you all kinds of data about the things Etsy buyers are looking for when they search for sewing crafts.

Join groups that are local to you as well as groups of other crafters.

Starting your own website is a great way to cut out the middle man, especially once your business gets going.
