What is Etsy?

A massive online marketplace for anything handmade.

From baby clothes to home decor and jewelry, you can buy all kinds of handcrafted items on the site.

According to the latest stats, in 2020 there were over 39 million active buyers on Etsy making it an amazing place to sell your homemade wreaths.

Do Wreaths Sell On Etsy?

Yes! In fact home decor is the top selling category for Etsy and wreaths for all seasons are really popular.

Wreaths are one of the best selling things on Etsy and if you know what you are doing, you can make a great income making and selling wreaths online.

Wreaths are a great thing to sell because most people change out their wreaths each season so they are not a “one and done” product.

People like wreaths for all seasons and holidays making them the perfect year round product to sell.

To be successful selling wreaths on Etsy, you need to sell high quality wreaths at competitive products and to have a great range of products for your customers.

Below we will look into how you can find out what wreaths Etsy buyers want to buy.

The Best Wreaths To Sell On Etsy

If you already know the kinds of wreaths you want to make and sell on Etsy, you are already ahead of the game.

However, there is no point in making wreaths that no one wants to buy.

That’s why market research is really important.

It can help you see what kinds of wreaths people are searching for plus the best selling wreaths on Etsy.

Here is how to do this research yourself:

Check out Etsy

First of all, spend some time on Etsy and search for different wreaths.

If you would like to sell wreaths on Etsy, I would suggest looking critically at the other wreath shops who will be your competition.

Look at the listings on the top of the search results (below the sponsored ads) and take some time to look at the shops that have the most reviews.

What kinds of wreaths are they selling?

How much are they selling them for?

How many products do they have in their shop?

Use An Etsy Keyword Tool

Once you have got familiar with Etsy shops selling wreaths, you can consult an Etsy keyword tool that will give you all kinds of data about the things Etsy buyers are looking for.

There are quite a few keyword tools out there, my personal favorite is Sale Samurai

You can get a free 3 day trial to check it out.

If you want to see how to use this tool to find the best selling wreaths, read my Sale Samurai tutorial and watch my video here.

You can perform a search on Sale Samurai that will show you the most searched for wreaths on Etsy plus information such as the average price point and the keywords that you should be using in your Etsy listings.

Here is the first page of my results when I search for the keyword “wreath”:

Using both a keyword tool and your own research on Etsy should help you find some great ideas for your Etsy business.

The Best Selling Wreaths On Etsy

To make things easy, here is a list of the current best selling wreaths on Etsy:

  1. Christmas Wreath
  2. Hydrangea Wreath
  3. Winter Wreath
  4. Lambs Ear Wreath
  5. Halloween Wreath
  6. Boxwood Wreath
  7. Pampas Wreath
  8. Fall Wreath
  9. Diva Wreath
  10. Driftwood Wreath

Bear in mind that within each category, there are many different types of wreath.

For example, within the driftwood wreath category, here are the most popular search terms on Etsy:

  • Coastal Wreath
  • ShabbyRustic Wreath
  • Square Wreath
  • Driftwood and Sea Glass Wreath

You can niche down your Etsy shop as much as you like but bear in mind that if you decide to only focus on wreaths for one season, such as fall, then you will likely only get sales during the 3-4 months before that time of the year.

It is better for sales to have products that are “evergreen” ie. they are in demand year round instead of just seasonally.

Listing Your Wreaths For Sale

Head to your Etsy shop and click on “listings”. You can now start to add your wreaths.

I recommend adding at least 10 listings to your shop in the beginning so that you have some options for your customers.

It’s well known on Etsy that having more items to sell  means getting seen more in searches which in turn results in more sales.

Each listing has a few different parts that you need to focus on:

  • Title
  • Photos
  • Category
  • Description
  • Tags

If you have Sale Samurai, you can actually create your listings on there and they will give you advice for the keywords you should be using.

Selling on Etsy is more than “make an item and they will buy.”

You will not get seen if you don’t take the time to learn Search Engine Optimization so that your listings are seen.

Here are some tips for making sure you get your wreaths seen by buyers:

Your Etsy Title

Make sure your title uses every available character to fully describe your wreath including the size, season, materials and anything else you can think of.

Don’t waste any space in your title, make sure to use as many characters as you have.

Here is a great example of someone making the most of their Etsy title:

Tips For Taking Great Photos Of Your Wreaths

The next really important part of your Etsy listing are your photos. After all, people want to know what exactly they are buying and how it will look on their front door.

You can add up to 10 photos per listing and I recommend adding at least 5 if possible.

Consider including the following photos of each wreath:

  • Close up of the details
  • The wreath laying flat on a table
  • Hanging on the front door

How To Write An Awesome Etsy Description

Your description needs to include as much information about your wreath as possible.

Include all the information about:

  • Materials used
  • Colors
  • Does it include a hanger
  • What occasion is it for
  • Size (in inches)
  • Any special information customers need to know including care instructions

How To Choose Etsy Tags For Your Wreaths

You can use up to 13 tags for your listing, the more you use, the more chance of someone finding your wreath in search.

If you have a hard time coming up with tags, you can use a program like Sale Samurai to give you ideas.

Just do a search for the keyword of your item and it will come up with the commonly used tags:

Tips For Promoting Your Etsy Shop

Once you have published your listing, it’s time to start promoting.

You can’t just wait for Etsy buyers to find your store, you need to spread the word both in person and online.

One of the best ways to promote your store is by moving outside of Etsy.

Use Social Media To Promote Your Etsy Wreath Shop

Etsy gives you easy ways to connect your Facebook and Twitter to your shop so you can keep your fans in the loop about new products.

Use any and all of the following social media outlets: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat and TikTok.

Make a point of adding photos of all your listings to social media and try and build a following.

Pinterest is possible one of the best places to promote your Etsy shop. It is completely free to get started and be a huge factor in driving sales to your business.

You can add pins that direct to your Etsy shop or you can pin directly from Etsy to your Pinterest account.

To learn how to get started on Pinterest, you can read my in depth how to guide on how to use Pinterest for Etsy.

Other Places To Promote Your Etsy Shop

Start A Blog

Starting a blog about wreaths is a great way to promote your Etsy business while building your brand.

In your blog you can write articles about how to make different kinds of wreaths and then link to your shop so that can people can buy them.

It’s really easy to start your own blog and it is super cheap. You can get my step by step tutorial here.

YouTube

The third way that is great for selling wreaths on Etsy is to start a YouTube channel where you show people how to make them.

You can monetize your channel with ads and also direct people to your Etsy shop.

Shipping And Packaging Your Wreaths

Packaging wreaths to send to your customers is a really important part of the process. After all, you want to make sure that the wreath arrives looking perfect!

You’ll want good sized boxes plus tissue paper or packing peanuts.

First of all wrap your wreath in tissue paper and seal with a sticker.

Make sure that your box is large enough for the wreath with no extra space left over for them to bang into the sides and get damaged.

Fill any remaining space with tissue paper or packing peanuts.

The last thing you’ll need to do is add in your business card or pamphlet.

A nice handwritten note to your customer is always really cute too.

You can get branded items made on Etsy or a site like Vistaprint.

How To Price Your Wreaths To Sell

To determine the price you list on Etsy, use your market research to see what other people are selling their wreaths for.

First, look up your competition and see what they charge.

Price your wreaths competitively.

Remember that most people hate paying for shipping so if you can offer free shipping while still making a profit, then this is a great option.

To decide on a price, consider the following:

The cost of your materials

Shipping and packaging prices

Your Etsy fees

Your profit margin (ideally at least 25%)

You need to cover all your costs (materials, fees, shipping) and make a profit.

They key is to price your wreath with those things in mind while staying competitive.

Most wreaths on Etsy average $40-60 plus shipping.

How Much Are Etsy Fees?

An important piece of the Etsy puzzle is the fees that you will be charged for listings and sales.

Etsy has increased their fees effective from 11th April 2022 so I am giving you the most up to date prices here:

Listing Fees

You will be charged a listing fee of $0.20 USD for each item that you list for sale on Etsy.com or Etsy’s mobile apps.

(Don’t forget to take advantage of the 40 free listings when you open your shop to save some cash).

Transaction Fees

Every time you make a sale through Etsy,  you will be charged a transaction fee of 6.5% of the price you display for each listing plus the amount you charge for delivery.

Etsy will automatically deduct all fees owed from your payment account so you do not need to pay them separately.

Other Places To Sell Homemade Wreaths

Although Etsy is definitely one of the best places to sell DIY wreaths, you can boost your sales by promoting your products on other platforms too.

Here are some places you can try:

  • Craft Fairs, bazaars and Farmer’s Markets
  • Local stores
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Your Own Website

Selling Wreaths at Farmer’s Markets and Craft Fairs

In person events such as craft fairs, holiday bazaars and Farmer’s markets are great places to sell your wreaths, especially around the holidays.

You will likely have to pay for a table at these events but you can more than likely make your money back with sales.

Make sure to get some business cards printed off at Staples or VistaPrint before you attend a fair so that people can get your contact details.

Read my guide to maximizing your sales at farmer’s markets here.

How To Sell Your Wreaths in Local Stores

If you can get local home decor stores to carry your wreaths for a small commission, this can be a great way to make some sales and get your name out there.

Many stores will be happy to display your wreaths at no cost if they can make some money on anything that sales.

Promoting and Selling DIY Wreaths On Instagram

Instagram is a great place to promote your wreaths and potentially get some direct sales.

Every time you have a new listing, make sure to upload images to Instagram and ask people to DM you if they are interested in buying it.

You can also advertise that you take custom wreath orders for holidays or special events with enough lead time.

How To Sell Wreaths On Facebook

Selling your wreaths locally on Facebook is a really good way to get started if you are new to making money with your hobby

First of all, it is free to use and you won’t have to worry about any shipping issues if you sell locally.

One of the best places are local buy and sell groups on Facebook, especially around the holidays.

People are always looking for unique decor for their homes and nowadays, everyone loves buying local.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook marketplace is the obvious place to start selling your items as you don’t need to pay anything and can reach a local audience.

You can create as many listings as you like for free. The only downside is arranging shipping or pick ups with your customers.

Your Facebook Page

You can create your own Facebook Page and promote your wreaths that way.

Ask for people to like your page and advertise sales and promotions.

Facebook Groups

In my opinion, Facebook groups are the best way to sell your wreaths

Join as many local groups as you can. Look for handmade groups, mom groups and neighbourhood groups.

You can add your listings to business promotions where allowed or respond to requests for unique decor and gift ideas.

Selling Wreaths On Your Own Website

One of the best places to sell your wreaths is on your own website.

Your website will allow you to build your brand and also get sales without paying a lot of fees.

You can choose to either sell your wreaths directly on your website or use your site to advertise your products and direct customers to make a purchase on your Etsy shop.

Directing people to your Etsy shop is the easiest option because then you won’t have to worry about finding a way to process payments.

Etsy does have a an option for their shop owners who want a website.

You can also create your own website in just an afternoon and for under $5 using a host such as Bluehost.

Bluehost will give you a free domain name to make it easy to get started.

Make sure when choosing your domain name (that’s the www.) that the same name is available on Facebook and Instagram.
